Powerful Message - "Stronger" Through The Eyes of Seattle Children's Hospital Patients

Amazing video from Seattle Children's Hospital featuring the song "Stronger" by Kelly Clarkson.  This video gives the words to the song a whole new meaning.

I had to share this video after I got done crying - not from sadness, but from the kinship and pride felt for the courageous individuals in this video, having a loved one who battled cancer.  I couldn't help but think about how strong my Daddy was in the final months of his life and I continually find myself wishing I had known how things would turn out so that I could have tried to make as much of an impact on his life as he has made on mine.

Life has thrown quite a bit at my family the past couple of years.  We have suffered many losses and continue to face many challenges.  God continues to see us through, for which we are grateful.  While we have had so many hurdles, Daddy's Dreams has been on hold because of my inability to do for others while trying to do for my own family.

Over the next couple of months, I am making it my goal to try and re-establish the Daddy's Dreams sessions so that we can continue to touch the lives of people who so richly deserve our love and support.  I will be updating the Daddy's Dreams information on my website and establish some times to continue to work on making "fabrics into works of heart."

Please take a moment to say a prayer for all of those impacted by the ugliness that is cancer.

Miss you Daddy!

Have a Blessed Day!!

Daddy's Dreams - In Memory of Danny H.

Danny Hancock
12/12/1948 - 07/02/2011

It is with great sadness that I share with you that Danny has lost his battle with cancer.  Danny was the first ever Daddy's Dreams quilt recipient and also a dear friend of my dad's, having served in the Army together during Viet Nam.

Danny and Daddy -1972

I will be arranging a special Daddy's Dreams session in Danny's honor soon, so be looking for that announcement.  Please keep his family in your prayers as they adjust to life without him.

Thank you to everyone who had a part in creating Danny's quilt.  While every loving stitch was intended to "wrap him in love" during his treatment, this quilt will now also bring comfort to his family when they most need it.

Danny will be laid to rest on Friday.  If you would like to leave a message for the family, you may do so at this link:  http://www.mccomasfuneralhome.com/_mgxroot/page_10726.php

I know when Daddy passed away, reading the messages on the funeral home website was a comfort to us, as I am sure it will be to the Hancock Family as well.

Have a Blessed Day!!

Please Help The Landreau Family

Most of you know that I am a proud firefighter's wife, as well as the daughter of a man who lost a hard-fought battle with leukemia.  Chris Landreau (26 years old) is a fireman who has recently been diagnosed with stage IV T-Cell Lymphoma.  He serves the citizens of Coweta County, Georgia, and may well have been one of the firefighters that responded to help my Dad so many times when he was sick.

Corbette Jackson wrote the song "Heart of  a Champion" about Chris:

WAYS YOU CAN HELP THE LANDREAU FAMILY
  • Pray.
  • Download "Heart of a Champion" on itunes.  Corbette Jackson is donating all proceeds from itunes downloads of this song to the Landreau Family.  Please consider downloading to help this fellow "fire family" as they face the journey before them.
  • Visit Chris Landreau's page at http://www.helpafireman.com/Chris_Landreau.html.  They are selling T-shirts to benefit the Landreau Family.  You will also find listings of all of the benefits and activities in his honor.
  • Donate firefighter-themed fabric to Daddy's Dreams for a special quilt.  100% cotton and/or cotton flannel material.  Mail to PO Box 1151; Pine Mountain, GA  31822-1151.  You may also email me with questions at katie.bellabdesigns@gmail.com
  • Share this post with everyone you know.
As this family faces the challenges of the future, please lift them in prayer and share what resources you can to make the coming months a little easier.

Have a Blessed Day!!

SHARE MORE CHALLENGE - Got Coupons? Help Chemo/Cancer Patients!

Coupon Clippers.... Donate your Boost coupons to help patients enduring chemo!  It costs you nothing but a little time to snip and a postage stamp!

I just read a post by A Frugal Chick regarding donating unused Boost coupons from the Sunday paper to an organization that distributes them to people in need.  There are benefits to drinking Boost while going through chemotherapy and, because of the extreme weight loss often experienced, doctors recommend drinking Boost to help combat the sides effects.  You can read all about it, as well as find out where to mail them at her post HERE

Please check your paper from this past Sunday.  There was apparently a $3.00 coupon for Boost, which I understand would knock the price down to approximately $3.00 to $4.00 to purchase.

I would love to do something with this locally.  If any of you know of somewhere that could utilize these coupons, please leave a comment and I will see about setting up a distribution system for Boost, Ensure, and Pedialyte via Daddy's Dreams!

2011 Goals - DREAM MORE - Goal #2

Goal #2 - DREAM MORE

Any of you who have been following me for a while know how important Daddy's Dreams is to me.  In 2011, my goal #2 is to DREAM more... more quilts, more hats, and more cards for patients with leukemia and other cancers.

The first thing I will be doing is posting updates on contributions and volunteer sessions over the past couple of months.  I have had issues with my laptop and also a series of illnesses in my family that have kept me from posting this information in a more timely manner.  SORRY!  Be looking for that information soon!

In the meantime, please mark your calendars for
01/22/2011 from to at Pleasant Grove UMC for the next Daddy's Dreams Volunteer Session and 01/23/2011 at at Pleasant Grove UMC for the blessing of the "Works of Heart" from the volunteer session.  Volunteering a little of your time can mean so much to those in need of support during a very difficult time.

Daddy’s Dreams was founded in memory of my Dad, Dennis Carter, who passed away at the age of 61 from Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML) in September 2009 after a long and brave battle with the disease. Daddy's Dreams volunteers and supporters are dedicated to being a source of strength for patients with "Works of Heart," "Happy Hats," and "Cards for Cancer Patients."  Please consider volunteering your time or resources - or just sending in a few cards or crochet/knit caps.  100% of the items donated go directly to making the difficult process of treatment just a little easier for those who need it.

WORKS OF HEART
The main focus of Daddy’s Dreams is to provide hand-crafted "rag" quilts for patients who have been diagnosed with leukemia and other cancers to “wrap them in love” during their ordeal with chemotherapy.  Quilts are donated to adults and children on a needs basis in the local community and beyond.  Daddy's Dreams is also currently accepting handmade quilts from individuals who wish to donate them.  These quilts will be blessed alongside the ones created in volunteer sessions and will be distributed in the same manner.  Please, due to concerns about low immune status of recipients, new material/quilts only.

HAPPY HATS
The Daddy's Dreams "Happy Hats" campaign is on ongoing project.  We are in need of hand-knitted/crocheted hat donations for male and female patients in adult and children sizes!  Female hats will be adorned by Daddy's Dreams volunteers with hand-crafted fabric flowers.  Adult female hats will be donated to a wonderful organization, "Hope for a Day,"  children's hats will be donated to Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta, and men's hats will go to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

CARDS FOR CANCER PATIENTS:
The Daddy's Dreams "Cards for Cancer Patients" campaign is also an ongoing project.  We are in need of donations of completed hand-stamped cards suitable for all occasions.  Include your own message of hope, love, encouragement, etc. inside the card.  No need to send envelopes.  I will place all cards in a translucent envelope before delivering to the respective facilities for easy distribution to those in need of a little "paper hug."

For full details and additional information, please visit the Daddy's Dreams online information gateway.  The links listed in red there have tons of information, photos, and inspiring stories.  We are always looking for volunteers and donations to keep this project going!  Thanks for blessing us so that we may bless others!

IMPORTANT DADDY'S DREAMS ANNOUNCEMENT!

CHANGE OF PLANS FOR THE VOLUNTEER SESSION ON 12/18/2010!!
Due to some health issues in my family, as well as this being the last Saturday before Christmas, I have decided to change our volunteer session to free up volunteers so that they may spend time with their families during this Christmas season.
Please see details below!

DADDY'S DREAMS VOLUNTEER SESSION
12/18/2010
12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.
Please stop by and pick up a project to take home and complete

We will have another volunteer session in January 2011 where you can return your project and work on additional projects the day of the January Volunteer Session.

This will mean we should have a huge amount of "Works of Heart" to donate to cancer patients in January!!

Thank you for all that you have done to make Daddy's Dreams a success in 2010... and most of all, thank you for blessing Daddy's Dreams so that we may bless others!

P.S.  Please note that my laptop has been out of service for a while now, which is where my photos are stored for the Daddy's Dreams sessions.  I have a new power cord (very happy that is all that was wrong!) now, so please be looking for updates on donations, as well as photos of our volunteer sessions to be posted soon.

Daddy's Dreams - Fourth "Works of Heart" Quilt Recipient

The recipient of the 4th Daddy's Dreams "Works of Heart" Quilt shows off his new quilt, which was sewn especially for him by Daddy's Dreams Youth Ambassador, Samantha M., and Daddy's Dreams Team Leader, Kelsie B.  Samantha M. and her mother, Kelly, were able to deliver the quilt a week or so ago.  He and his family send their thanks to Daddy's Dreams volunteers and donors.  Please send up prayers for this young man and his family as he undergoes treatment for T-cell Leukemia.

Look for photos from the volunteer session soon!  I have to download them from my camera, but couldn't wait to share this sweet child's photo with you!

Welcome to the Daddy's Dreams family!  May your quilt warm your body and your soul and wrap you with the love and prayers of total strangers that now call you family!

Can you Crochet and/or Knit? Know Someone Who Does? PLEASE HELP!!

We are a far cry from meeting the "Hundred Happy Heads Before 2011" challenge.  PLEASE HELP!!  Daddy's Dreams is still in need of crochet and/or knit "happy hats" for chemotherapy patients.  If you crochet/knit please consider stitching together a hat (or 2... or 10!!) and donating them to Daddy's Dreams.  If you know someone who is able to crochet/knit, please forward this information to them.  We will need an army of yarn artists to reach this goal, but we can do it!!!

Here are all the details from the previous post......

I am very excited to announce that Daddy's Dreams has been approved to be a part of the Charity Connection on the Lion Brand® Yarn Website!  You can visit the group page by clicking HERE.  Information on the group is found there, as well as links to free charity patterns.  You may also shop for yarn on this site.  Would love to have "A Hundred Happy Heads By 2011!"  Please help us meet that goal!

GUIDELINES:
If you would like to donate Happy Hats to Daddy's Dreams, there are a few requests that I need to make so that they will be comfortable and appropriate to the needs of a chemo patient with hair loss.  General guidelines are as follows:
  • Hats need to be full coverage with a tight/closed stitch using super soft yarns.  The tight stitch is necessary so that the head beneath will not be exposed.
  • Any color and style is fine.  Please try to be mindful of the necessity to cover the head of a chemotherapy patient for warmth and comfort. There are some cute patterns if you search "chemo cap" on the Lion Brand site!
  • We are in need of male and female hats in children and adult sizes.
  • Female hats do not need any "decoration" unless you choose to do so, as we will be adding removable/changeable fabric flowers to the caps before donating them to the respective organizations.
Should you wish to help, donations may be mailed to:
Daddy's Dreams
c/o Katie Burke
PO Box 1151
Pine Mountain, GA 31822-1151
Once we receive the hats and complete any adornments, they will be received by the following organizations:
  • Adult female hats will be donated to a wonderful organization, "Hope for a Day,"
  • Children's hats will be donated to Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta.
  • Men's hats will go to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia (where my Dad was treated).
SEND ME YOUR PHOTOS!  Please bless us so that we may bless others!
  • If you are part of a knitting or crocheting group, I would love to spotlight your organization on my website with a group photo, along with a photo of your donation!  Just email me your group photo at katie.bellabdesigns@gmail.com and let me know that your donation is on the way!
  • If you are an individual making a donation, please do the same and please let me know if you are donating in memory/honor of someone you love.
We are also looking for donations of Cards for Cancer Patients.  All information may be found at this link:

CALLING ALL CARD MAKERS!!! Announcing Cards for Cancer Patients Campaign

Who doesn't love a handmade card when under the weather?  Imagine being in a hospital for weeks on end taking chemotherapy.  No flowers allowed because of health concerns.  Nothing to brighten your day.  You miss your home, your family, and your security.  When my Dad was at Emory, he would make the nurses use surgical tape to paste pictures and cards to the wall across from his bed that the grandchildren had made.  By the time his first round of in-house chemo was over, he had accumulated quite a collection.  Now, imagine how it would feel to receive a surprise card from a total stranger just to say somebody cares!

I am launching a Cards for Cancer Patients Campaign starting today and lasting indefinitely!  If you are interested in participating, please create a few (or a bunch of!) handmade cards and send them my way!  Here are the details:
  • Handmade cards only please.
  • All themes welcome - birthday, holiday, thinking of you, etc.
  • Please include a personal message of encouragement, hope, inspiration, love, etc.
  • Mail cards to:
    Daddy's Dreams c/o Katie Burke
    Cards for Cancer Patients Campaign
PO Box 1151; Pine Mountain, GA  31822-1151
  • Receiving facilities will be Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta, Emory University Hospital, and Hope for a Day.  If we receive a large number of cards, other facilities will also receive cards!  The more cards you send, the more lives we can touch in more widespread areas!
  • No need to include envelopes!  I will place the cards in translucent envelopes before delivering to the respective facilities so that it will be easy for them to be appropriately distributed to the patients.
  • If you would like a card to go to any of our "works of heart" recipients, please address those to the individual you wish to contact and I will be happy to forward them along!
I am very excited about launching this program and hope that we can reach more and more patients as the Daddy's Dreams movement continues to grow.

Please let me know if you have any questions!  I can be reached by email at:

Reminder: Daddy's Dreams October Volunteer Session TOMORROW, 10/09/2010!!

SEWING MACHINE AND BIG SHOT OWNERS, WE NEED YOU DESPERATELY!!!
Bring a non-crafting buddy to help as well! Lots of non-sewing tasks available!

NOTE: LONG DISTANCE VOLUNTEERS ALSO APPRECIATED!!
If you own a Big Shot and a Scallop Square Die and/or Flower Folds Die, we welcome you to cut cotton and/or flannel fabrics and send them in for us to assemble into "works of heart."
Send to: Daddy's Dreams c/o Katie Burke @ PO Box 1151; Pine Mountain, GA 31822-1151.

Please join us on Saturday, 10/09/2010
9 am to 5 pm
for our October Daddy's Dreams Volunteer Session!
Bring a snack to share and a happy heart!

During session, we will be sewing pre-cut scallop squares into "rag" quilts, as well as assembling flowers for hats to be donated to women/girls suffering hair loss as a result of chemotherapy. We need lots of volunteers to bring their own sewing machines to sew these squares together (simple straight s...titch is all that is required!!) and found that it is best to work in pairs with an additional (non-sewing) person snipping threads and stacking squares as we go along.

We stilll have fabric to cut into 5" strips, as well as run through the Big shot, so any individuals who wish to help with that are also welcome! The more we cut and sew, the more people will benefit from our creations!

All completed "works of heart" will be blessed during the regular church service at Pleasant Grove UMC at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 10/10/2010. Everyone is invited to attend and share in blessing these items and those who will receive them.

Click on the Daddy's Dreams tab at www.bellabdesigns.com for more information on what items to bring (current needs list) with you, photos, stories of recipients, as well as other ways to help with this ongoing project!  Hope to see you Saturday!
