Now Accepting Daddy's Dreams "Happy Hat" Donations! If You Crochet or Knit - WE NEED YOU!

I am very excited to announce that Daddy's Dreams has been approved to be a part of the Charity Connection on the Lion Brand® Yarn Website!  You can visit the group page by clicking HERE.  Information on the group is found there, as well as links to free charity patterns.  You may also shop for yarn on this site.  Would love to have "A Hundred Happy Heads By 2011!"  Please help us meet that goal!

GUIDELINES:
If you would like to donate Happy Hats to Daddy's Dreams, there are a few requests that I need to make so that they will be comfortable and appropriate to the needs of a chemo patient with hair loss.  General guidelines are as follows:
  • Hats need to be full coverage with a tight stitch using super soft yarns.  The tight stitch is necessary so that the head beneath will not be exposed.
  • Any color and style is fine.  Please try to be mindful of the necessity to cover the head of a chemotherapy patient for warmth and comfort. There are some cute patterns if you search "chemo cap" on the Lion Brand site!
  • We are in need of male and female hats in children and adult sizes.
  • Female hats do not need any "decoration" unless you choose to do so, as we will be adding removable/changeable fabric flowers to the caps before donating them to the respective organizations.
Should you wish to help, donations may be mailed to:
Daddy's Dreams
c/o Katie Burke
PO Box 1151
Pine Mountain, GA 31822-1151
Once we receive the hats and complete any adornments, they will be received by the following organizations:
  • Adult female hats will be donated to a wonderful organization, "Hope for a Day,"
  • Children's hats will be donated to Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta.
  • Men's hats will go to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia (where my Dad was treated).
SEND ME YOUR PHOTOS!  Please bless us so that we may bless others!
  • If you are part of a knitting or crocheting group, I would love to spotlight your organization on my website with a group photo, along with a photo of your donation!  Just email me your group photo at katie.bellabdesigns@gmail.com and let me know that your donation is on the way!
  • If you are an individual making a donation, please do the same and please let me know if you are donating in memory/honor of someone you love.
Have a Blessed Day!

Daddy's Dreams - Pay It Forward

What a blessing Daddy's Dreams has been!  That which I have received, far outweighs anything I have given on this project.  Just when I thought my heart couldn't possibly be more full, the goodness of people continues to humble me!

Pay It Forward #1:

A few days prior to the September Daddy's Dreams Fabric Cutting Session, I received an unexpected box in the mail from Danny H. and his wife Karin:

They live hundreds of miles away, so, as much as they want to, they can't participate in person with any Daddy's Dreams activities.  Instead, they printed a copy of the Needs List and went shopping in a foreign land (aka the sewing department).  They sent some much needed items for use at our September Daddy's Dreams session.  They also provided 2 of the Scallop Square Dies that we use to cut the quilt squares.  THANK YOU!!!  We have special plans for this fabric and the notions were much needed!

Pay It Forward #2:

I was thrilled to find out that Samantha M. and her mother, Kelly, would be able to join us for the September Daddy's Dreams session.  It was amazing to meet Samantha in person and, even more amazing that she was able to come just a day after completing her last round of chemo!

Samantha cranked out hundreds of quilt squares using the Big Shot and the Scallop Square Die while her mom layered the fabrics for her.

Bless her heart!  Did I mention that she cranked out hundreds of quilt squares?

Samantha brought along her Daddy's Dreams quilt and I was pleased to see that she very genuinely loves it.  Samantha and Kelly plan on coming back next month to help again, where they will try their hand at sewing!

As always, the Daddy's Dreams project would not be possible without the generous donations and volunteers who spend countless hours making "works of heart."  Thank you to everyone who has had a part in making Daddy's Dreams a reality!

Deliciously YUMMY Minky donation!  These pictures represent 2 HUGE boxes of Minky remnants and yardage that no photo could possibly do justice.  This is the softest fabric on the planet and there is tons of it!  My daughter and I sat there and just ran our fingers through it forever.

This donation comes to Daddy's Dreams from Denise at The Minky Boutique.

Denise and I have gotten to know each other via email and she is an amazing lady.  Please visit her website at http://www.theminkyboutique.com/

In addition to all of this Minky, Denise sent me BOLTS AND BOLTS AND BOLTS of white flannel fabric that she had planned to use in the production of a new line for http://www.myhopeandhealing.com/.  Look for more information here on my blog about My Hope and Healing when the website goes live!

These bolts of white flannel will be used to make the rag quilts we are making for Daddy's Dreams warm and cozy, as we will be using them for the inside layer.  What a blessing!

Denise, thank you for helping to make this possible and please keep us posted on when My Hope and Healing goes live!

We will be putting these fabrics to good use on 07/30 and 07/31.

WOW - Robert Kaufman Fabrics - Thank You!

I arrived home from my cousin's wedding in North Carolina this weekend and found that a box full of quilting fabric had been delivered to my doorstep.  It was a HUGE box stuffed to the rim with an assortment of yummy fabrics donated by Robert Kaufman Fabrics for the purpose of creating quilts for people/children diagnosed with cancer.  What a wonderful and generous donation!

For those of you who may not know, my Dad died in September after a brave battle with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) at the age of 61.  Since that time we have struggled to come to terms with his loss and the hole it has left in our family.  Initially, I had planned to work with Project Linus, but have since decided to place my focus locally in our community and will be working with my Stampin' Up!® downline, the Bella B Stampers, and my church, Pleasant Grove UMC.  What a wonderful way to live the Statement of the Heart!

My children will be attending a special camp in LaGrange, Georgia at the end of the month.  Camp Dogwood is sponsored by West Georgia Hospice and their goal is to assist in the healing process of children after they have suffered the loss of a loved one.  This box full of goodies arrived at the perfect time!  I plan to contact someone with West Georgia Hospice and introduce the idea to them, as well as begin to work out details.  I want to make this blanket/quilt project a success here in the West Georgia area.

I should probably have waited until I had all the details to present to you before I posted, but I was so very excited and grateful to Robert Kaufman Fabrics that I couldn't keep it a "secret!"  Be looking for more information regarding a "cutting session," where we will come in and cut fabric.  It will be simple and won't require any sewing experience at all.  We simply would run the fabric through the Big Shot using the Scallop Square Die and stack the cut squares for a future sewing session!

Some other items we will be needing will include:
  • Full size cotton sheets (any color - to be used as inexpensive backing fabric - please only newly-purchased sheets because of health concerns for those with weakened immune systems)
  • Assorted fabrics in cotton, flannel, and fleece
  • Big Shots, Scallop Square Dies, and cutting pads (need people to bring and/or loan for cutting sessions)
  • Rotary cutters and mats (need people to bring and/or loan for cutting sessions)
  • Sewing machines and thread (need people to bring for sewing sessions)
  • Clear shoebox size "rubbermaid" containers to store cut fabric in
Long Distance and still want to help?
Feel free to mail me supplies/fabric that you would like to part with (pre-cut Scallop Square Die fabric squares would also be fabulous!!).  Contact me for more information on where to send donations!

Once again, a big thanks to Robert Kaufman Fabrics for giving me the blessing of a jumping off point for this project!  I look forward to sharing more specific date information in the near future!

Have a blessed day!
